Final Round I GGD

While European Union citizens were increasingly critical of the quality of health services and several European States restricted access to public health care systems for immigrants, the USA debated the need to expand or eliminate Obamacare; inside a tenacious social, academic and mass media debate about the nature and extent of the Right to Health.

The Board of GGD invited students to discuss this issue and proposed the following question:

Does the State have to provide basic healthcare, public health prevention and life risk coverage for all the people inside

its territory, without any direct additional cost for the person involved?

The inaugural Global Governance Debate took place on the Yale campus in March 2019. The Question discussed was about Right to Universal Health Care. Yale International Relations Association (YIRA) collaborated in the organization and development of the debate.

Six Teams, eighteen students from 4 nationalities took part in the Debate -with 6 matches and a Final Round. All the competition was hosted by the MacMillan Center at Yale University. The Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies (CLAIS) sponsored the event. All the registration, preparation and participation were free for all students.

_________________  (NMUM Yale Association) as staff member moderated all rounds. The Jurors -Bioethicist Carolyn Brokowski, PharmD/PhD (in prog.); UCV Economics Professor María Escrivá Beltrán and a YIRA member- (see more about Jurors here) decided to award (ex aequo) the teams composed by  ___________, ______________ and _____________ and the team composed by Verónica García-Menacho, _________________ and _________________ the prize for the best in the Debate. It also decided to award the student Veronica Garcia-Menacho as the best speaker in the Debate.

It was a six hours event, with an energetic and passionate interventions. The students had the opportunity to discuss positions, exchange ideas, show their preparation and reflect on all this in a lunch after the Debate.

According to one of the participants, Sara Reggio (La Sapienza University), As the only Italian student, it has been an incredible honor to participate to the global Governance debate in 2019 in Yale. We had the chance to improve ourselves, studying and preparing to defend our positions on if «healthcare it has or not to be considered as a universal right».
