Third GGD Edition

MacMillan Center, Yale University Virtual Debate (COVID-19)

The year 2020 will go down in history as the year when Humanity suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. With the global number of people infected reaching -according to official, not definitive estimates- 29 million by mid-2020-and continuing to rise, the virus has put the world’s largest economies in check and caused notable changes in the way humans relate to each other.

While scientists around the world are trying to learn about the virus, various controversies and movements are questioning its origin, spread and response. While citizens put their trust in experts and guidelines from transnational levels in the hope that – through cooperation and multilateral work – they would advance a solution, a strong controversy – encouraged in part by national governments themselves – questioned the honesty and diligence of decision-making within International Organizations.

In the course of a strong and growing political and international tension, the Board of GGD proposed to the students to address the confidence in International Organizations issue through the following question:

Were the actions taken by the World Health Organization in response to the COVID-19 pandemic appropriate?

The III Edition of the Global Governance Debate was hosted by MacMIllan Center in June 2020.

The «Questión» under discussion concerned confidence in the decisions taken within international organizations. The Debate was developed by the Yale University MAcMillan Center in collaboration with the Yale International Relations Association. The Debate was developed via Zoom caused of COVID19 restrictions. Due to technical difficulties, only four teams – made up of twelve students – were able to participate in this edition.
This third edition consisted in two days event: On June 26, Eugenio García-Huidobro Herrera (Yale Law School) moderated a panel discussion in Spanish with two law professors from Spain (Prof. Alberto Arrufat, Jean Monnet Chair and Prof. José Ramón Canedo, Universidad de Deusto), together with GGD participants. The following day, June 27, six students from each institution debated, in English, about the validity of the World Health Organization response to the pandemic.
